Phoenix Lord Maugan Ra

My favourite of all the Pheonix Lord, Maugan Ra. Ever since I was a child I have wanted to paint this character. This is another beautiful sculpt that has stood the test of time. I painted him with a very limited palette of contrasting colours. I wanted to preserve as much of the skeleton outline of the piece as I could, picking out gems in a sickly green.

Phoenix Lord Jain Zar

For the third Pheonix lord I decided to try my hand at marble armour. I knew that white would feature with a few other models so I wanted to create a contrast without resorting to a different colour scheme. I used turquoise to pick out the gems

Phoenix Lord Fuegan the Burning Lance

My week of Phoenix lords didn't materialise as planned. I had a job interview last week, and I have cut the tip off my finger (completely unrelated). But never mind my self mutilation, here is the second of the Pheonix lords: Fuegan the Burning Lance.

I was very worried starting out painting this model that the red gold and green would make him look like a christmas tree. I've tried to contrast the red with the gold, not the green, using the latter colour sparingly to pick out the jewels.

Phoenix Lord Karandras

All this week I will presenting the Immortal Lord of the Eldar; the fabled Phoenix Lords. My first entry is the shadowy Karandras. For this miniature, I tried to use as little metallics as I could; reflective surfaces are no good for stealth and infiltration. I also decided early on not to use a very muted colour scheme with red rubies to enliven the model a little.

Commission; Sanguinary Phalanx

Here is the work from my latest commission; TMM SAnguinary guard, Dante, Sanguinor and Priest. I recieved these models absolutely dripping in gold and red paint and had to strip them down before I could start the work. I was lucky to work with a very patient and amiable client who allowed me the time to reform these models into what you see before you. I hope he enjoys.

Tale of 40K painters: Dragging the 90's into the 41st Millenium

It's that time of year again. Warseer have today put up their sign up sheet for their yearly tale of 40K painters. Instead of being a spectator, I decided to put myself forward to see if I had what it took to complete it.

To give myself a realistic chance of completing at least 10% of my chosen points value (1,500 pts) per month, I have chosen to repaint my very first army: The Ultramarines. Following on from my TMM Ultramrine experiment I will be repainting my 90's marine army in a similar vein. I have devised a quicker technique that offers very pleasing results (see test miniature below).

Inspired by the sign up thread, I've added some colour to my first assembled squad. My aim is to create an army inspired by the Utramarine army shown in their first codex. I have been feverishly stripping my old models, repairing the bizarre conversions I inflicted upon them, and trying to figure out which ones are lead, and which ones are white metal.

If you would like to participate please sign up here on Warseer's Tale of 40K painters thread. And good luck for all entering this year!

The Disgraced House of Naggarond update; Spearelves WIP

Quick update on my dark elf tropue of spear elves.  They have been undercoated, dusted and I have started the on the armour. I have mixed some satin varnish into armour to add lustre to the black and to help me layer blend the white.

Peppermint App; the mobile colour wheel

I know app's a rare sight to see when discussing the hobby, but I recently stumbled across this little gem; Peppermint

This is a mobile application for the creation of colour palettes and schemes. Simply pick your main colour and choose analogous, complimentary monochromatic etc and this app will create a colour palette for you.

Where this app really stands out is the photo function. If you see a colour you like, you can take a photo and retrieve the exact colour to match on the colour wheel. You can save palettes and name them too. Within minuetes of playing around with the lite (free) version, I decided to buy this. It's a great little app to consider the creation of custom colour schemes.

The Last Legion: Daemon Host Holocaust

I created this enslaved daemon prince for my Black Legionaires. I wrapped GW's razor wire to simulate movement and used the Tomb King's Carrion's wings. I imagine that this would daemon prince would have been crafted to represent an angel chained within the material realm.

Kharn The Betrayer

I managed to pick this wonderful, classic miniature up for a bargain on eBay. I bought it for 99p including postage and realised why it had sold so cheaply when I discovered it came without his plasma gun! Unperturbed I decided to create a scenic base inspired by the original Mark Gibbons work.
