Chaplain Aquilante Fasutino
The Taking of 'Seperbia Dei' Void Boarding action.
9th Company, 18th Chapter

Aquilante, here pictured leading a boarding party into the Seperbia Dei (III Legion classification 09. M31), was part of a new generation of Legionnaire whose primary experience of war was fighting in the Heresy, rather than the expansionist ideal of the Great Crusade.

The Chaplain's armour presents us a problem in dating. The MKIII boarding plate was largely a relic by the time Faustino took his position, replaced en masse by MKIV within the Blood Angel Legion. Cross reference reveals this armour had the honour of being in the presence of the Emperor at the Triumph of Ullanor and held a ceremonial value within the IXth. With elements of the 18th being sent independently into the void, its numbers swelled by new recruits from Baal, this armour become a physical link to Terra.

Chaplain Veraggio, the previous incumbent of the armour, whilst bringing the joyous message of reunification to the peoples of 42.27, was most basely lain low by the ignorance of those people later brought to wrath. Whilst the bulk of the blackened armour was salvaged, the helmet was lost and now bears the artifice of a Baalite Deathmask.

This model was very much an excerise in how to paint black armour effectively. I used an airbrush to put the basic tones in place, then I gave the entire piece a filter of turquoise. With a brush I reinforced the shadows and highlights. The Legion iconography is absent as I wait for the Blood Angels decal sheet to be released by Forgeworld. I'd still like to add freehand to this piece, the right pauldron looks like an especially tempting area to add something nice.

How gorgeous is this model? As soon as I finished her I wanted to paint another.

This assassin fits in with the usual archetypes of the assassin - La Belle Dan Sans Merci of the 41st millennium.

This clade still feels relatively new to me. I remember when the Celexus was first released and gawking at that strange oversized helmet. Reading about the horror of the Pariah left an impression in the wider background of 40K and on myself. Like the Evesor this assassin strays away from the usual Assassin archetypes and strays into much stranger territory.

Officio Assassinorum Vindicare

Exitus Acta Probat

Those were the first Latin words I remember committing to memory. To a ten year old they sounded like words I could live by, good words to repeat in times of crisis and what not. I'm glad I grew out of it now knowing the kinds of things people do using this philosophy as a justification. But no such moral angst is engendered by the scions of house Vindicare where the deed has to justify the act.

No other Assassin quite captures the macabre, insane feeling of the 41st millennium than the Evesor. A hellstorm of biological death, the Evesor is designed to rip the heart out of enemy. I went for muted, moody blue hues to eventuate the sculpt with brass fittings to keep the dark malevolent tone.

More Assassins are inbound all this week. May the Alien, Heretic and Traitor tremble.

-Chaplain Faustino

Has it really been two weeks since the weekender? That event felt like a hurricane that I'm only now recovered from. It's great to meet old friends and new but we need longer than two days to see everyone.

I just wanted to write up a quick note of my initial impressions of the Blood Angels entry from Forgeworld's latest offering; Retribution. I'm working my way through the bulk of the book but I have flipped forward to read the colour text and rules of my legion. I am a very happy boy, here's why:

The colour text that introduces the Blood Angels hit all the right notes. They have the feel of Old Testament Angels - figures of wrath and revelation, descending on a culture and slaughtering it wholesale if they reject the entreaties of the Imperium. A storm hit the UK recently and I found myself in Cardiff next to the millennium stadium. There has been a demolition of a building near by with struts of metalwork sticking out of the ground like broken fingers. When the wind whipped around these it made a strange music, like a long atonal sigh that was more than a little unsettling. I could imagine the atmospheric chaos a mass orbital insertion of a battle fleet would cause to a planet. Imagine yourself citizen, pensive at the decision  your world has made to reject subjugation to the Imperium, to these 'Angels', trying to get with your day to day life. Then, the skies darken, there is a storm, a deluge of rain and hurricanes - it would be hard not to feel like some God has cast his judgement upon you.

Then the Angels descend.

The colour text also brings up some interesting questions , for example why was the process of creating warriors of the ninth so arcane? Did it have something to do with the creation of Sanguinius?

I don't feel qualified to offer any kind of tactical analysis of the rules. What I can say is that they feel right. If I read these rules without any context I would still think these were Blood Angels. The Day of Revelations is very evocative of the assaults launched by the IXth, whereas the Day of Sorrows was a little harder to crack. Why would Blood Angels have a rite of war that seems to be defensive in  nature. Then it struck - Siege of Terra! High five Alan Bligh.

The artwork is sublime - infuriatingly so as I have no idea how to transfer these ideas onto the miniatures themselves. I hope Forgeworld kick out an amazing decal sheet and spares me hours of work free handing all of this.

This book has all the elements I wanted from the Blood Angels but this isn't our story, this isn't our book. Our defining event of the Heresy is the Siege and I'm more than happy to wait for rules, models and a book. Because when that story is told, the IXth will be centre stage ripping the traitors to bits!

P.S. - I'm aware that we haven't seen an update from the space angel/ vamps in a while so I've settled on getting a post out every Friday to catch up. So look out for the Shadow of Mighty Wings article every week.

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!"
