The magic formula of brass, turquoise, olive and marble strikes again with this Legion support squad. Sure to draw lots of attention on the battlefield, but damn do they look good doing it.

Notice the halo of light emanating onto the armour of the Astartes from the plasma coil. This little touch really adds realism to the effect.

This was one of my favourite miniatures to paint from the entire army, indeed the entire squad has a special place for me. I decided to break Legion protocol and embellish there unit designation with the custom twin scythes "Ut cemented feeders" - bestowed upon them by Erasmus Golg.

This forms part of a larger force of Death Guard force that has been growing for the past two years. It's such a fulfilling experience to build a large force and invest it with so much personality. The green, turquoise and faded chipped white armour is a great colour combination.

I’ve had the pleasure recently to give Fallout Hobbies making stencils a whirl. Working on a Deathguard commission gave me the perfect opportunity to add some biohazard signs and the Leviathan Dreadnought’s open surfaces allows the artist to experiment.

First off, what is a vinyl stencil? Taken directly from Fallout Hobbies website:

“Fallout Hobbies Airbrush Stencils are all produced on high quality, low tack white paint mask vinyl. They are durable and will last multiple uses with proper care and removal.”

This is what it looks like out of the packet and here is the sheet. The Biohazard sign comes in several different sizes perfect for smaller graffiti signs or larger surfaces like the Leviathan.

You can see how clear the pattern is once you remove it from the backing. The stencil is tacky but isn’t aggressively adhesive. I placed this on a surface that had been treated with chipping fluid making the paint extremely fragile. Despite this no paint came away once the paint was applied.

How do we use the stencil?

Paint the miniature as you normally would.

Carefully remove the stencil from the backing (a pair of tweezers is ideal for this, but using your fingers is fine).

Gently rub the stencil onto the surface, making sure there are no wrinkles or gaps for paint to get underneath the image.

Airbrush a contrasting colour (black on white for example) over the stencil.

Remove stencil and huzzah! You have a pattern that can be weathered, damaged and played with. Feel free to overlay several stencil on top of one another - go freestyle, be creative.

I hope you enjoyed this small tutorial. I hope to show you more techniques using these stencils and other techniques. If you enjoyed this please feel free to share, comment below and subscribe to our Facebook or Instagram accounts.

"Mortui Vivos Docent"

In life this legionnaire served in the Deathguard's vaunted Destroyer cadres, gaining the unique honour of his Primarch allowing him to drink a draught of Mortarion's own tonic. Meeting his end to the cancers riddling his frame due to prolonged exposure to bioharardous material, the Legionaire's second life would see him reborn inside the experimental Leviathan class Dreadnought. The fell symbols of chemical warfare from Ancient Terra adorn this living emblem of Deathguard stubbornness in the face of mortality.

Again this project was inspired by seeing Fallout Hobbies excellent biohazard set of stencils and decals. The large surface on the front of the Leviathan offers us the perfect canvas to do something cool. The barbed talons of the biohazard sign has always looked faintly evil to me, a sign of ultimate death pain. If anyone has any information on how the Biohazard sign came into being I'd love to hear it (I don't know what the equivalent term would be for the history and formation of signs as etymology is to language).

And yes, that is a genuine Forgeworld Salamander Contemptor Dreadnought at his feet used solely for the purpose of basing material. Suck it lizard lovers!

Deathguard Contemptor Dreadnought designation 'Hazard'

The Deathguard, and especially their vehicles, offer us the opportunity to really go nuts with weathering. We can crack out the weathering powders, oils, enamels and just go hello for leather destroying out pristine paint job - but without knowing where to place these nice bits a model can look drab, dirty and worst yet, badly painted.

I'm working on a tutorial showing you how to create these effects and the kinds of things to avoid. Tomorrow we'll have a look at a quick tutorial on how to create a stencil sign for your vehicles.

I'd like to thank Fallout Hobbies for their wonderful biohazard decal set and sign. Absolutely gorgeous set that are easy to use and are an absolute blessing for Deathguard armies.

"Fear me mortals, for I am the Anointed, the favoured Son of Chaos, the Scourge of the World. The armies of the gods rally behind me, and it is by my will and by my sword that your weakling nations shall fall."
~ Archaon, Lord of the End Times

This thing is a beast! I know you've heard it before but I was surprised just how Archaon is (he's the size of a Primarch) but the beast itself towers over a Knight Titan. It was a challenge to break it down mentally into how I was going to paint it. The client sent over some inspirational art and I tried to keep in the spirit of what he sent me.

This model has vast sweeps of open skin to play with which, while daunting, allowed the opportunity to play with some new vinyl airbrush stencils from Fallout Hobbies. I've taken some photographs of the step by step and I'll writing up a step by step tutorial on how to best apply these to your own work.

"The First Axiom of Victory is to be other than where the enemy desire you to be. The First Axiom of Stealth is to be other than where the enemy believes you to be. The First Axiom of Freedom is that justice without force is powerless; force without justice is tyranny."

Dynameis terminator squad.

The vaunted Dynameis formed the shock core of boarding actions of the 33rd assault division sequestered to Belarius' command. Specialising in zone mortalis actions, the Dynameis were recorded to have fought in the Sol System at the time of the siege. Infamously the surviving members formed [REDACTED].

My first batch of terminators are now complete. After reading the rules for Blood Angels I doubt these will see much action in games of 3k points of lower but they make perfect members of a Zone Mortalis force. The models themselves are created from the Emperor's Children Phoenix Terminatos and the Cataphractii resin kit.
