The Contemptor Pattern Dreadnought was once a mainstay of the armoured might of the Astartes Legions of old. Larger and stronger than standard pattern Dreadnoughts, the Contemptor’s systems featured many examples of techno-arcana steeped in the sacred mysteries of the Legio Cybernetica. Some chapters still boast these war relics amongst their ranks, and whenever the Contemptor takes to the field of battle, it is an echo of the power of ancient days.

This model was painted as part of a masterclass series of online tuitions, guiding the student through painting marble, freehand and faces. Please check out the below link for information on how to sign up for these masterclass courses:

When I first received the Betrayal at Calth I was determined to get the best out the the rather static looking Contemptor dreadnought. It still has the aesthetic feel of the resin Contemptor but doesn't have the spirit.

So, I wanted to use this as a practice piece to see exactly how far I could push weathering and chipping techniques. This is the result. I've taken step by step instructions on how I created this for an extreme advanced weathering article.

Painting up a Knight titan maniple in service to the dreaded Deathguard gave me a huge opportunity  to stretch out my weathering legs and have a good run around. The main body of the armour has been given a rusted worn look by using a combination of hairspray chipping, sponge chipping and good old fashioned brush work. All this complimented with weathering powder gives the effect of an aged vehicle that has stood on a hundred worlds.

The freehand images are in line with  Deathguard iconography. The deaths head, the reaper, the eagle's bone lying on rotted green field all harken back to the rot of Father Nurgle.

I must admit, the Freeblade app has got me really pumped for knights. Shall we have a week of nothing but knights? That should start off 2016 on the right foot.

Deathguard Contemptor Dreadnought commission by Lil'Legend Studio.

This carries on my experimentation with oil weathering. I'm in the process of writing up a tutorial on how I painted a Deathguard Contemptor (hopefully released before Xmas).

Deathguard Legion drop pods commission by Lil'Legend Studio. Oil weathering is so fun, if time consuming.

The shadowed and sinister Mortarion was Primarch and Commander of the Death Guard Legion. Raised upon a nightmare world of fell secrets and necromantic horror where humans were hunted like animals, the darkness that surrounded him seeped into his soul and would never leave him. Fiercely driven and relentless, the reaper-Primarch led his Legion to become wrathful liberators, spectres of death and judgment to whom no battlefield was insurmountable and no foe too terrible to face. With lies and half-truths did Horus sway Mortarion to his cause, and the price that he and his Legion would pay for their role in the Heresy would be nightmarish beyond imagining.
