The motif of the labyrinth and the Minotaur is an ancient one, reinterpreted by every generation to help understand the times we live in. I became obsessed with this myth after reading The Helmet of Horror and knew it was something I'd like to incorporate into the visual language of The Iron Warriors. This is wholly unoriginal, McNeil having introduced this troupe into Angel Exterminatus.

What would an Iron Warrior force be without devastating artillery? The crew have been left separate for ease of shipping. The metallics were shaded with overlapping inks used through an airbrush to create depth.

This is a very creepy scheme to paint - lots of flat, off white with dashes of red and green in the metallics. Unfortunately this knight was painted before the official House Malinax transfer she was released, so we used the very macarbe Legio Mortis sheet instead.

To add interest to the metallics I used green ink, airbrushed on in several successive layers to contrast with whatever warmth exists in the beige tone.

Alleluia! May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest,
Alleluia. The Choir of Saints have found the well-spring of life and door of Paradise,
Alleluia. Weeping at the grave creates the song: Alleluia.
Come, enjoy rewards and crowns I have prepared for you.

Pre Untiy song, unknown.

This is the project I worked on over the Christmas break. I knew unless I painted it then, I wouldn't have another long stretch off my work load until next year. The inspiration for this piece came from Master of Mankind, an offhand comment by the Bringer of Sorrows to Arkan Land describes Baal's culture resembling that of the Holy Roman Empire. Little details like this provide a context to explore the artwork and develop pieces like this.

Those large open space on the carapace cried out for some form of freehand and mapping it proved to be troublesome. Lots of time was spent just getting the proportions right to begin the paint work.

Enjoy the weekender guys! See you there.

Such a classic piece - but why or why did they release it in fine cast! I didn't want to copy the original artwork too closely as this is a 3d model that needed different considerations of light, shadow etc. I went for a soft highlight with the airbrush with harsher lights with a brush.

Anyone else getting really jacked up for the Horus Heresy weekender?

Limited Edition Primus Medicae Blood Angel Commission - This white was built up from a khaki base coat, working up through the whites, then shaded with a cool grey. White doesn't have to just be white and black, try adding blues and yellows into the mixture and see what you can produce.
