The third knight Titan in a collection painted for a Deathguard army. These titans have been bonded with the legion, their pilots replaced with more loyal subjects and later more malignant entities. The freehand is remincient of the themes of the Deathguard - the inevitability of decay, time, death, all weighty subjects.

The weathering effects were created using this tutorial with a picture of enamel and oil washes.

The Old Hound, Former captain of the 9th Cohort.

Created in limited numbers in the latter days of the Great Crusade, the Leviathan pattern Siege Dreadnought was developed in secret on Terra, away from the pervasive oculars of the Mechanicum. Its massive frame incorporates hybridised technologies, some dating back into the dim past of humanity.

Towering over later Imperial walker patterns, this heavily armoured dreadnought is savagely powerful. It was designed for siege warfare and primarily armed with close combat and support weaponry that can rend buildings, vehicles and flesh alike; though it is no less effective when armed with the powerful and esoteric short ranged weaponry uniquely developed for it. The Leviathan’s oversized reactor allows it to bear weapons more powerful than other classes of dreadnought, and also powers reinforced energy fields that surpass those developed for the Contemptor class.

Power has its cost though, and the systems of the Leviathan place a lethal level of strain on the minds its occupants. Those few examples that survive in the armouries of Space Marine Chapters into the 41st Millennium are reserved for the direst of circumstances. Marines who find themselves interred within a Leviathan will pay a heavy toll; either with their life, or their reason.

I had a few thoughts running through my head painting this commission. I knew I wanted the chains to be prominently shown. It's such a prominent image, so fitting to the legion and the person interred in the dreadnought shell. Themes of slavery, denial, being bound runs throughout the story of the War Hounds (who would later go on to be the World Eaters). I imagine that this suit has been in storage while the legion has gone to ruin so I was quite keen on showing this with the paint job. The blue hasn't got the same contrast as I normally put into these kinds of models - I wanted it to look neglected worn by dust and starting to rust.

Armillus Dynat, the Harrowmaster of the Alpha Legion, has been a feared strike commander since his name came to prominence during the invasion of Paramar. Known to possess strategic genius, his style of warfare is as intricate as it is unorthodox. Using fast moving, heavily armoured vehicles and close air support, he will split enemy formations apart before crushing them without mercy.
Armillus Dynat is an expert duellist and warrior in his own right. Wielding a thunder hammer and power sword in unison and carrying uncommon wargear such as venom spheres and phosphex bombs, he is an opponent to be reckoned with.

If you would like to paint your own Alpha Legionnaire force check out this tutorial in the "Painting the Legions' section.

Painting up a Knight titan maniple in service to the dreaded Deathguard gave me a huge opportunity  to stretch out my weathering legs and have a good run around. The main body of the armour has been given a rusted worn look by using a combination of hairspray chipping, sponge chipping and good old fashioned brush work. All this complimented with weathering powder gives the effect of an aged vehicle that has stood on a hundred worlds.

The freehand images are in line with  Deathguard iconography. The deaths head, the reaper, the eagle's bone lying on rotted green field all harken back to the rot of Father Nurgle.

I must admit, the Freeblade app has got me really pumped for knights. Shall we have a week of nothing but knights? That should start off 2016 on the right foot.

Unbelievable sculpts. Just like the Gal Vorback I'd easily blow through a wad of cash to get an army of them. Sometimes my job is very easy to make the sculpts look good - this was such a case.

If you'd like to know how I painted these I have a full tutorial here

Unknown Legionnaire Commander. Unofficial cognomen 'Prophet of
Rust'

This Praetor was painted as part of the Deathguard Commission painted earlier in the year. I wanted to create something quote superior, a pose that echoed Horus Lupercal's. I had the phrase 'prophet of rust' revolving around my head creating it but I didn't have much more of a back story. I think the story must come from the battles he will go on to fight in the future.

Deathguard Contemptor Dreadnought commission by Lil'Legend Studio.

This carries on my experimentation with oil weathering. I'm in the process of writing up a tutorial on how I painted a Deathguard Contemptor (hopefully released before Xmas).
