I joined the hobby in 2nd edition, one of the first images I saw was the big red captain (before I knew they were called blood angels) blasting away at Orks on the cover of the starter set. Blood Angels have been a long running fascination of mine - indeed the very first game I ever played was a Space Hulk mission in store where the terminators were painted in a light orange Blood Angels colour scheme. I feel like I am a pretty modern painter. I use modern techniques, airbrush, oil wash etc, but I feel that my roots lie in old tutorials presented in White Dwarf. I've written an article on how to paint classic Blood Angels from rogue Trader Era and painting this current set of terminators felt like a push and pull between the modern and the classic.

The real star of the show was Com Art Medea's Opaque Red - it's the perfect blend of modern grim-dark and classic Blood Angels Red (that was slightly more orange than red). The dead terminator went through a similar painting process to the rest of the marines but was undercoated black instead of white. This makes his armour duller with a less polished appearance. It's a subtle hint to the natural decay of the character locked aboard a dying hulk.

You'd have to work very hard not to like genestealers. From the ostentatious limousines of the cults to the rohypnol stare of the genestealers, they've occupied an horrific Cthulu niche in a universe populated with terrors.

This was a commission piece for a client who wanted me to recreate the colour scheme from the original boxed set. I went for a base of Opaque Violet, highlighted with Opaque White  and then washed with Inner Mouth Flesh on the flesh areas which was further highlighted with Flesh. The purple carapace was washed with warlock purple mixed with Gunk (home made dilution agent).

These models were then varnished and given an oil wash to help define the details.

The base for the grey armour was given a base coat of Blue Gray Smoke from the Com Art Medea Airbrush range and gradually highlighted with white.  Large flat surfaces tend to be rather boring, especially in grey, so in order to liven the piece up a bit I washed very thin layers of purple and red into the shadows and turquoise into the lighter highlighted parts. This created a faux non metallic metal effect that I was quite pleased with. I then took the thinnest brush I could to paint very fine scratches over the armour.

I washed several layers of red into the recess' of Krom's face to mirror his crimson cloak. The Cloak really stands out against the grey armour and the cool tones of the base, helping define the ferocious character of Krom.

Squad Gideon

"We are our fathers second sons, and we are all the fiercer for it. His pain burns sun-hot in our veins, undiluted by old honour or tithe. We are him at his purest, his most wrathful. We took our rage and tried to blunt it on the stars themselves, waging a crusade as bloody and vicious as any that had gone before. We bled the galaxy without mercy. We bled ourselves without respite, battling almost unto extinction. But still we were not cleansed, out actions not out own. Still, the Thirst endured."
